Schlumberger and National Oilwell Varco (NOV) have announced the creation of a joint venture (JV) aimed at providing high-speed drilling string telemetry systems for oil and gas operations on a global basis. The JV will reportedly improve the safety and efficiency of drilling operations through expanded use of NOV’s IntelliServ broadband network.
The IntelliServ network is a patented technology that provides high-resolution reservoir data from downhole tools to the surface quickly and reliably as oil and gas wells are being drilled, NOV states. The network, which is based on wired-pipe telemetry, currently has a data transfer speed of 57,600 bits per second?up to 20,000 times faster than the transmission speed using conventional mud-pulse telemetry, the company adds.
The network allows for data acquisition from multiple locations and multiple tools along the drill string, as well as real-time surface control over downhole instruments, enabling accurate evaluation of the downhole drilling environment, more precise navigation of the well bore to targeted intervals, and an overall reduction in drilling time and costs.
NOV owns 55% of the JV and will provide manufacturing, technical, and operational support. Schlumberger owns 45% and brings evaluation and measurement expertise, and also will pursue the development of advanced drilling-related systems enabled by the IntelliServ network. The JV will maintain the open access architecture of the network, and will seek to become the industry standard for all drilling tools utilizing high data transmission rates, the companies said in a press release.
Pete Miller, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of NOV, said, “Our new joint venture with Schlumberger will permit us to better serve our customers by opening a range of new intelligent drilling possibilities, and expanding the global reach of the IntelliServ Broadband Network,” which has already been successfully deployed in North America, South America, the Far East, and Europe in onshore and offshore applications.
Commenting on the transaction, Andrew Gould, chairman and chief executive officer of Schlumberger, said: “The combination of our respective strengths in drilling measurements and telemetry brings a unique opportunity for a step-change in the development of technology capable of significantly improving drilling performance through continuous information about the well and the reservoir, as the well is drilled.”
